ELEVEN

Nate wasn’t happy with the way he’d left things with Claire the night before, but he hadn’t known what to say. What was there to say after a kiss like that?

Unfortunately for both of them, the kiss had said everything. Neither could deny anymore that there was an attraction on both sides. But that didn’t mean they should act on it. They were adults. Certainly they could...ignore it.

But Nate was willing to admit that the cold shoulder he’d given her last night had been too much. He’d never meant to be unkind. He’d just needed...space.

This morning, he was ready to apologize, see if he could make things right and they could just move on.

He knocked on the door, ready to pick Claire up so she could walk around the dock with him—another last-ditch effort to find a lead that could help them. It was a plan they’d decided on last night as he’d dropped her off. After a few seconds passed, the door opened, slowly. It was Gemma, and she didn’t look happy to see him.

“Want to explain to me why my sister came back here last night looking so upset?”

Nate opened his mouth, but Claire interrupted before he could talk.

“Gemma!” Claire shook her head. “I love you, sis, but I am fine. I told you I was tired last night.” Claire shut the door behind her. Shrugged. “Sorry about that. She can be a bit overprotective.”

“Ready for a ride on my bike?”

“Not yet.” She shook her head, and Nate was relieved. He’d offered as a matter of course, not expecting her to take him up on it. He would have been thoroughly unprepared if she had. After last night’s kiss, he wasn’t ready to be that close to her again.

“Mind if we take your car, then?”

“Be my guest.” She handed him the keys, climbed in without another word and faced the window.

Nate was still rehearsing his apology when his phone rang. “Hello?”

“It’s Matt. I found out about that body.”

“Yeah?”

A second of silence. “It was Tony Carson.”

Nate didn’t know how to process that. “Tony.”

“Yes.”

“Last week. Very near the time Claire says she painted the lights at night.”

“So they might be concerned that she witnessed more than a drug run.”

“Exactly. They probably think she could have seen them commit murder.”

That explained why they were so determined to kill her.

“I’ve got to go,” Matt continued. “We’re working a lot of angles over here, trying to figure out if all of this drug stuff ties to Jenni or if her death was just coincidence.”

“By all means, keep working, then. Thanks for updating me. Talk to you later.”

He turned to Claire. “The dead man was Tony Carson.”

“Really?” She blinked back surprise.

“Yep.”

“What does this mean for your case?”

“I’m...not sure yet.”

“Speaking of the case,” Claire began, “we never talked about that conversation we overheard last night. Do you think it means one of them will be at the business meeting tonight?”

“It sounded like that. What is the business meeting?”

“The downtown merchants meet semiregularly to discuss different aspects of running a business downtown.
